Top Ten Words or Topics That Instantly Make Me Buy A Book
Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

Words or topics that instantly make me buy a book. I thought this would be an easy list to make but browsing through my read and own shelves made me realise some interesting things about my insta-buy preference if we ignore my insta-buy authors and focus on words in title or topic of book.

DRAGON

Love them, Wanna hang out with them. Fly on them. They are the most awesome mythological creature for me.
Books I have read just because they had word 'dragon' in title: Dragonflight, Dragon Bound, Here There Be Dragons, The Last Dragonlord, A Natural History of Dragons, ...

Mythology

Egyptian, Greek, Slavic, .... The more unusual are the gods and legends added to the mix, the more I love that book. Example of some books I picked up only because of this theme: Ilium, Undeadly, Goddess of Spring, American Gods, Vukodav, ...

Alternate History

I am fascinated with alternate history setting. What if plague in dark ages mutated our genes: God Save the Queen, How would regency England be if magic was part of everyday life: Shades of Milk and Honey, What if elves conquered England long time ago: The Fire Lord's Lover, ...

Epic Fantasy

You know those fat books with interesting fantasy pictures on the covers with some sword-wielding knight or similar scenes? I'm instantly attracted to them. I don't care what they are about, if it's epic fantasy I'm interested. Some of the books that I read without even reading the summary for this reason are: The Eye of the World, A Game of Thrones, The Chronicles of Amber, Lord Foul's Bane, The Final Empire, The Briar King, ...

Kick-ass Heroine

You know the type. They fight for their right to party. Stand proud on the cover in some impossible pose that Jim C. Hines called cramp-inducing and shoulder-dislocating. Like: Halfway to the Grave, Shadow Kin, ...

Geek / Nerd / Dork

I'm one of those persons that proudly think about herself as a geek although my naughty husband teases me I'm a book nerd. Still, I'm attracted to books with these words in title, like: Geek Girl, Poltergeeks, The Rapture of the Nerds, Adorkable, ... And I just realised that I haven't read any of them, although I have them for some time. o.O

Succubus

Another weird quirk of mine. If I hear book is about succubus or incubus (demons who seduce people and usually feed trough either sexual or life energy) I'm going to read it. I guess that it's my romantic side cheering for them to find love. :)
Example: The Demon Lover, Gentlemen Prefer Succubi, ...

Courtesan

The same like with above mentioned succubi, I am attracted to life or romance stories about either male or female courtesans. Everyone deserves to be love and find their happily ever after.
Books I read just because of heros/heroines profession: Memoirs of a Geisha, Kushiel's Dart, The Duke, Fallen from Grace, Escorted, ...
BTW I blame Pretty Woman for this succubus/courtesan obsesion.

Friends to Lovers

I tend to pick romance stories about friends that after some time discover that they are in love with each other, probably because my husband and I were that case and I can best relate to their problems and feelings.
Some of the books that I liked but that were picked just based on this criteria: The Body Finder, Hot in Here, Lola and the Boy Next Door, Just Like Heaven, ...

Beach

I love beach, sand, sea, swimsuits, ... So if I notice some of this on a book cover, I'm reading it. Sadly, these books usually are just average but I still keep buying them. I guess because it's cheaper than going on real vacation. :D
Books I have read only because they sported beach-y cover: Forget You, Falling for You, Fallen Too Far, Twisted Summer, ...

Well that's it from me. Do we share the same insta-buy words or topics? What books are on your list today?

    1. I don't know anyone who likes stories about succubus except me. I guess I'm weird. I blame tv series 'Lost Girl' for that one. :D

  7. Minus the succubi and courtesans, I am all over this list. I'm slightly picky about epic fantasy, since I don't want the ones that are all battle all the time, but otherwise hell yes.

Dragons are awesome. This makes me want to read some Anne McCaffrey.

    1. I don't mind battles in epic fantasy, I still have some on my tbr that my friends complained had too much battles, so I will see how that turns out. :)

I am thinking about making a new challenge for me to read one Anne McCaffrey book a month. there are so many I haven't read.
