Although I appreciated uniqueness and originality of Another Little Piece
The start was great, the mystery and everything around Annaliese was so chilling and with shocking discoveries every 20 pages or so I was literally glued to the screen of my ereader reading like there was no tomorrow. But as the story developed it was inhabited with too much drama llamas for my taste. Seriously, could not just one character in this book be normal and ordinary? Everybody had some deep dark secret or tragic past...
Add to this too many plot holes in paranormal background of the story, some loose ends left hanging, feeling that ya characters in this book are having too much sex (no explicit descriptions of course) and you got me sighing and sadly concluding that this book was just not for me.
If you like ya horror novels about amnesia full of tragic characters and nail-biting mystery, and you are not put-off by some gruesome scenes involving blood then Another Little Piece

Hmmmm, everyone's been saying I should read this one, but I'm not sure about those drama llamas. Probably depends how connected you are to the characters whether it rings true or melodramatic. I guess there's only one way for me to know.
ReplyDeletePlot-wise this was the most original ya book I have read this year. But I don't know something was missing for me to make a connection to the characters and they all seemed so exaggerated and melodramatic. But as I said I think I am an exception. I hope you like this one.
DeleteAnother Little Piece sounds so intriguing to me, but if the characterization isn't there-that might be a problem. All the other elements sound great. I'm going to keep my eye on this one. Thanks for the review! :)
ReplyDeleteNo characterisation is good, it's just that I like to have 'real' people in my contemporaries/paranormal novels and here everyone had some big secret or problem, no one was 'normal'.

Okay, that quote you posted? Chills! I'm a sucker for anything with horror or gore, so you can bet this has me intrigued. However, the things you struggled with - everyone having some big tragedy, the plot holes and loose ends - make me a little nervous.
ReplyDeleteIf you like ya, horror and gore than this book has it. And very original premise. Most of other people who read it didn't complain about the things that bothered me. I guess I like my paranormal things explained better: origin, more history, how did they do that... It's hard talking more about it without spoiling, sorry. :/
