Top Ten Favorite Characters In Fantasy Genre

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

Topic for top ten list today is 'Top Ten Favorite Characters In X Genre' - and I picked Fantasy. This was a fun list to make, to think about all the books I loved and remember my favorite characters. The only downside is that I now have strong wish to re-read most of them again. :)

1. Wolf

(from The Talisman by Stephen King & Peter Straub)

The Talisman is one of the rare books that made me cry when I read it for the first time and you can blame Wolf for that. On first encounter he did not promise to be much more than big (and stupid) side-character, but Wolf turned out to be so much more... All the sacrifices noble Wolf will make for Jack and how pure his feelings and friendship are... I think everyone deserves to have one TRUE FRIEND like that.

2. Lessa

(from Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey)

Why Lessa? Because she has her own DRAGON. Yes, Daenerys has three but Lessa's dragon is much more well behaved and they share minds and can talk. You could say that dragon is Lessa's best friend. Also Dragonflight is the first non-fairy tale book with dragons I read, so it has a special place in my heart because of that too.

3. Daenerys Targaryen

(from A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin)

At the start of A Game of Thrones, Daenerys was a BEAUTIFUL princess living in exile with bully for a brother. She had my sympathy from the start. But then she gets a man-candy Khal Drogo as husband, shows that she's smart & TOUGH and even gets three dragons as pets. I admire Daenerys because she survived losses of people very dear to her and she still keeps going on - fighting for justice.

4. Celaena Sardothien

(from Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas)

Celaena got my attention from the beginning of Throne of Glass. What words best describe Celaena? Fierce & kick-ass. After all she's the most notorious assassin in her country and she survived for a year in very cruel prison where people die after month tops. But my favorite thing about Celaena is the fact that she's a BOOKWORM and has her nose always stuck in some book and can be found reading until dawn. :)

5. Joscelin Verreuil

(from Phèdre's Trilogy by Jacqueline Carey)

You could say I had a minor BOOK CRUSH on Joscelin from the moment he appeared in Kushiel's Dart. As a warrior monk/priest he was all prim and proper (although also kick-ass - don't forget the warrior part) and he got the job to be a bodyguard to a courtesan. The books in Phèdre's Trilogy series sometimes dragged along but I did not stop reading because of him. I wanted to grab and shake Phèdre multiple times because I don't think she appreciated enough all the things and ideals he sacrificed for her.

6. Renee de Winter

(from The Cadet of Tildor by Alex Lidell)

Renee is studying at the Academy of Tildor and training to be officer in army. She's not very tall or strong, but she does not let her size or bigger opponents scare her. If she can't overpower them, then she will outwit them. I always admire DETERMINED people who fight for their beliefs and to achieve their dreams.

7. Jaenelle Angelline

(from The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop)

No, I do not admire Jaenelle because she is the most powerful witch to ever exist (although when she stops the sun from raising to prove a point... I mean, damn, girl has some serious power). No, I liked Jaenelle's gentleness and CRAZY QUIRKS - the ones that usually made her mentors grab their heads in despair or get headaches. :)

8. Katsa

(from Graceling by Kristin Cashore)

KICK-ASS heroines are my weak spot and always dear to me but Katsa is one of my favorite book characters that fit that description. Not only that she is deadly in battle & always able to survive, Katsa refuses to fit into a mold forced upon her by society and makes her own destiny.

9. Anne Dare

(from Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone by Greg Keyes)

When we meet Anne in The Briar King she is just another spoiled princess. But she soon won me over with sheer stubbornness. When they tell her that she can bring with her into the monastery only as much as she can carry and Anne still drags her biggest traveling box (bigger than her)? LOL moment. :) But then as the series progressed, Anne starts (eventually) making ALL THE RIGHT CHOICES... Anne is one of the rare princesses who put the happiness of her kingdom & people before her own.

10. Harry Potter

(from Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling)

I'm so sorry that this series is published when I was on college, I think I would adore it even more if I was younger. I had a love/hate relationship with Harry - when he grew up and started to make teenage tantrums he annoyed me a lot, but he got to the list of my favorite characters because he made me wish to be a WIZARD again. (I gave up on those dreams long time ago but Harry Potter revived them, so if any of you know where I can buy cheap magic wand or flying broom, let me know.)

Obviously my favorite type of characters are either kick-ass heroines or male heroes that will sacrifice everything for their beliefs or their friends. Also having some awesome magical powers is a bonus. ;)

Let's Talk:

  3. i haven't read anything here but Harry Potter, but I definitely agree that he was really annoying at times, but in the end, his bravery and even stubbornness was what made the series. ~daphne

    1. Yes it's true and the annoying parts made him more human, less perfect, but still he annoyed me especially in book #5.
