Top Ten Books I Recommend The Most
Tuesday, March 26, 2013Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish
Is then any better feeling then when I friend tells you that he/she liked the book you recomended and then you go on a lengthy conversation about that books, plot characters etc. For me, almost nothing beats that wonderful feeling - that I gave a couple of hours of enjoyment to a bookworm friend. :)
I usually can't just say: "This is good read it!" I have to know a little bit more about person's tastes and what do they like, so my recommendations are grouped into a couple of categories...
♥ Fantasy Lovers ♥
- What? You have never read anything by Brandon Sanderson? Shame on you! Go and read The Final Empire and the rest of Mistborn trilogy ASAP! You may thank me later. ;)
- Hmm so you read have Sanderson... How about Martha Wells? She has very original world building and wonderful descriptions of environment. If you liked the nature in movie Avatar, I think you are going to enjoy her Books of the Raksura series. Just start with The Cloud Roads...
- If you think that ya has nothing to offer to older fantasy fans, think again - His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman is simply a.w.e.s.o.m.e. Steampunk-ish setting, animal companions, armor-wearing warrior polar bears, ... If you skipped it before because it is sometimes labeled as young adult or middle-grade fantasy, go back and read it. You won't be sorry.
♥ Science Fiction Fans Looking For Something Different ♥
- What does Greek gods, humans fighting dinosaurs on post-apocalyptic Earth and robots on a space mission to explore far-away planets of Solar system have in common? Read Ilium by Dan Simmons and find out. ;)
- Like action packed thrillers? Then Nexus by Ramez Naam might be your thing, especially if you like genetic engineering and human enhancements added to the mix.
♥ Want to Have a Good Laugh? ♥
- For fantasy, urban fantasy and paranormal fans there is Sympathy for the Devil by Holly Lisle where all hell literally gets loose. I loved this humorous picture of Hell, Satan and his minions.
- And for mystery fans who like quirky detectives, well there is no one crazier than Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams...
♥ Looking For a Great Love Story? ♥
- If you like Eastern culture and especially Japan then my recommendation is Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden.
- If you would rather have contemporary setting and like your books full of emotions and do not mind that setting is mental hospital then check out Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho.
- And last, if you would like contemporary romance but all new adult novels feel the same, check out Easy by Tammara Webber. It has great character development and touches some serious subjects (like rape).
This list is not ordered, it just seemed interesting to group them this way. :)
Let's Talk:
Well that's it from me. What are your top ten books that you recommend the most? Do we share the same ones?

I've read Memoirs of a Geisha but didn't care too much for it. It's a great book but too serious for my liking, I think. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat list, Dragana!
Julie @ Books and Insomnia
Well based on your list I agree that 'Memoirs of a Geisha' is too much literal fiction for your taste. My recommendation for you, based on your favorites, would be for example: The Holders by Julianna Scott. :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by.
Yeah, I know, I'm actually really ashamed because I've wanted to try his books for years, long before I started blogging, but still haven't...
ReplyDeleteActually, I haven't read any of these, although I've heard great things about all of them, and they're all on my TBR, I guess I get distracted by newer books...
I know me too, I have tons of books on my tbr that I have wanted to try out for ages but always some shinier cover distracted me. :)
DeleteI'm ashamed to say that I've only read the last three. Tough I love other Coelho's books better. Philip Pullman is on my must read list. Soon I'll hopefully read it :) Thanks for stopping by :)
ReplyDeleteWell don't be ashamed, not everyone can read all the books in the world and all genres are not for every taste. I'm not sure how would you like some of these, although I think you will like Philip Pullman, I even saw they got translated box-set, so pretty. :)
DeleteAwww Memoirs of a Geisha :). Absolutely love that book. It's amazing. Great list!
ReplyDeleteHere's my TTT
Yes it's full of amazing little details, you really learn a lot about Geishas. :)
DeleteBrandon Sanderson: I've read two, but neither of those series. They're on my TBR though.
ReplyDeleteMartha Wells: Read none, but she's on my list.
His Dark Materials: Woo! I've read and loved them.
Ilium: Never heard of it, but just added!
Nexus: Put on my to-read list after the cover reveal. Glad it's actually good!
Memoirs of a Geisha: I didn't like it. Don't hate me.
I hope you find free time to read them soon., Misborn is really good series. I think you are going to like it.
DeleteMartha Wells - not so good at characterisation but has wonderful descriptions and interesting/original races and cultures. Not sure if that's your thing though...
fan-girl high-five for His Dark Materials :D
Ilium is one of the books I would probably never read if I was not broke and it was thick (about 800 pages) and I noticed it on sf shelf in my library. I was always lazy so I picked the thickest books so I would not have to go to library every day. :D But Ilium really surprised me - it's so full of twists and turns and unexpected events. And everything is explained in the end.
Nexus was great for my geeky side. Installing apps directly into your brain. How cool is that? :D
As for Memoirs of a Geisha, I'm not one of those people who think that everyone must love the book I liked. I really love Eastern culture and I learned a lot of Japan and geisha's through this book. What you didn't like in it?
